In recent months, there’s this story that Jesus tells that has been challenging me, chewing at me, and changing me.

He’s talking about this new Kingdom he’s ushering in; those who will be part of it and those who will not be welcome. The surprise in the story is that it’s not the religious people who are good at working hard or being moral, but the loving people who get right in the midst of the mess of life and pain that are welcomed in.

In fact, those who do not have active and practical compassion for the pain of others are kicked out. Jesus says he doesn’t even recognize them. They are not his family.

Jesus says about the King of this new Kingdom, “For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me…I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!” Matthew 25:35-36,40.

This reality of what being a Christian is all about is sobering, practical, and calls us to act in great love. But the problems of the needy in a global community where there’s a crisis on every continent every day of the week feel overwhelming.

Where do we go from here? How do we begin giving drinks, food, shelter, clothing, and relationship to the most desperate?

This is why I love World Vison’s Village2Village program. This program is all about pooling our resources to help the needs of whole communities. And these are the needs the villages themselves have said are their goals and priorities, not ones imposed on them. Together, when we give monthly whatever little amount we can to these people in great need, we engage compassion and relief in a holistic way while getting connected to a community’s success stories and updates on how our pooled funds are being used.

It is a privilege at See Hear Love to partner with these kinds of organizations that make real impact in the big problems of the world that none of us seem to know what to do with.
